Homes for Our Time

OVERVIEW
‘Homes for our Time: Contemporary Houses around the World’ is an architectural publication published by Taschen. The book seeks to highlight contemporary homes which honour and work in harmony with the natural environment. Whilst interning at London design agency Collaborate, I was able to work on the sequel publication to the original HFOT, alongside another publication, written by the same author, called Small Houses. My role involved assisting the Creative Director and Senior Designer in generating and refining spread layouts within InDesign, alongside assisting with photography selection and cover design.
The design ethos was to highlight the architectural photography and ‘dim’ the secondary elements whilst ensuring legibility remained intact. We chose images to sit atop of black pages rather than white; this gave the photography a greater presence due to the contrast created between the often light-filled architecture against the rich black background. The copy was printed in grey in order to ensure the photography is treated as a focal point, whilst the text being treated as an addition which the viewer may dip into as they please. Due to copy taking a back seat, getting the photography selection and order right was imperative to ensuring readers could understand the journey of the buildings through imagery alone.
