05. New Machines

‘New Machines’ is an architectural design project completed whilst a final year undergraduate student of architecture at Newcastle University.

The project was situated within the derelict steelworking facilities of Redcar. The ambition was to convert the site into a center for closed loop food production and historic tourism, with hopes to provide employment and economic security for those suffering from the loss of employment due to closure of the Redcar steelworks.

The project also focused on creating a novel method of indoor farming and how an architectural language might reflect struggle between industry and nature.
